I am of the opinion that any breed of dog when treated properly (with kindness, love, and given boundaries) can be a wonderful addition to a family. While there are responsible breeders, there are many who are not responsible so be sure to do your due diligence when selecting a new dog. I am also a huge advocate of adoption. You can easily find almost any breed of dog, at almost any age by simply googling the breed you are looking for, the word rescue or adoption, and your location. Contrary to many incorrect assumptions, rescue dogs are not necessarily dogs with issues. Many rescue dogs have been surrendered to shelters by families whose housing situation has changed and no longer allows for the family pet, many rescue dogs have lost their elderly owners and do not have another family member willing or able to take in the now orphaned animal, many have been rescued from puppy mills (as both puppies and breeding animals), etc. Basically the stories and personalities of rescue dogs (and cats) are as varied as are the stories of people.
